“Why medium format?“
This is a question that gets asked a lot, along with “Why spend that much?” “Who needs that many megapixels?” and (all too often) “What’s a ‘Medium Format‘?” Considering the investment, the relatively-high resolutions of current-generation DSLRs, and the perception that 35mm systems provide “good-enough” image quality, it’s a question that comes up often.
To help understand these questions, as well as dispel some of the myths around medium format in general, we asked a handful of today’s top photographers to share their personal stories of what attracted and lead them to making the switch – whether it was the advanced features, increased resolution and flexibility, or something more intangible.
