We love the RZ Pro II D, it’s a versatile camera that is still used in production sets and by personal photographers all over this country. It’s even better now when you add the Electronic Shutter, built in to the Phase One IQ3 100MP, into the mix which eliminates the use of the shutter and the (huge) slap and vibrations that accompany it.
One of the most asked questions regarding the RZ comes as no surprise as it can become confusing:
Which Phase One Digital Backs work with which adapters on the Mamiya RZ and RB cameras?
To help set the record straight, here are the current combination and limitations using Mamiya RZ & RB cameras when using a Phase One digital back:
Mamiya RZ 67 PRO II D
The PRO II D was produced in 2004 with digital backs and sensors as it’s #1 priority. IQ and P series digital backs with a Phase One mount can be used on the Mamiya RZ PRO II D by way of an additional adapter. This configuration does not require any cables.
This is the smoothest and most seamless solutions for shooting with a RZ.
Maximum exposure time is 60 seconds.
Mamiya RZ 67 PRO II
IQ and P series digital backs with a Phase One mount can be used on the Mamiya RZ PRO II by use of the RZ PRO II D adapter plate + lens sync cable to digital back.
IQ and P series digital backs with a Hasselblad V mount (Hasselblad 500 mount) can be used on the Mamiya RZ PRO II by using the Phase One RZ PRO II adapter plate.
There are 2 cables on the adapter, where the fixed cable is mounted on the Mamiya RZ body and the removeable cable is mounted to the lens.
Sadly, this adapter has been discontinued, only second hand ones can be found now. We suggest moving to the PRO II D where full functionality, metadata and 1 shot mode is supported.

Mamiya RZ67 PRO MK I
This is the original RZ released in 1982. It uses the same discontinued adapter plate as the RZ PRO II.
Phase One IQ and P series digital backs with a Hasselblad V mount (Hasselblad 500 mount) can be used on the Mamiya RZ PRO MK I by use of the RZ adapter.
Sadly, this adapter has been discontinued, only second hand ones can be found now. We suggest moving to the PRO II D where full functionality, metadata and 1 shot mode is supported.

Mamiya RB
Originally released in 1970, the Mamiya RB camera will work with IQ and P series digital backs with a Hasselblad V mount. You must have the RB mount adapter from Phase One, though this item has sadly been discontinued but can be found on the second hand market.
Mamiya RB lenses can be used with RZ PRO IID with a wake up cable from lens to the digital back.
