Since the film days, 80mm lenses have been invaluable workhorse optics for medium format photographers. By offering a natural angle of view, robust depth of field control, and high image quality with a relatively simple optical formula, that remains true to this day — the most current lens in this focal length, the Schneider Kreuznach 80mm f/2.8 LS Blue Ring lens has found a home in a nearly every Phase One photographer’s kit.
Phase One veterans will remember that the most recent incarnation of the lens, the Blue Ring, was born in the early days of 40, 50, and 60MP digital backs, while newer users can attest to the fact that the lens remains an excellent option on 80, 100, and even 150MP digital backs. But all will admit that its age began to show on the higher resolution sensors, particularly next to its newer siblings in the Blue Ring family.
As such a critical part of the Phase One photographer’s arsenal, it was only a matter of time until a new lens formulation would be developed, and we’re pleased to announce that the Schneider Kreuznach 80mm f/2.8 Mk II Blue Ring lens is available for order! We can’t tell you too much yet, but it is similar in size, only about a half-pound heavier, and much, much, sharper!
